The main function of the Alkaline Electrolysis Cell (AEC) is to split H2O (from air) into H2 and O2. The AEC consists of Nickel-mesh electrodes, pressed on either side of a porous membrane. The membrane is very hydrophilic, and thus repels gas bubbles. This effectively keeps H2 bubbles on one side, and O2 bubbles on the other side of the membrane. The O2 is purged to the atmosphere; the H2 is buffered in an H2 buffer..

Alkaline Electrolysis Cell
Codename: #teamAEC
Approach
The team consists of multiple teammembers focussing on different parts of the project.
- Process modelling
In order to make the right design decisions the process is modelled using matlab / python.
- Component design
The components are modelled in Fusion 360 (3D CAD) and then either 3D printed, turned, milled or made using any other useful method.
- Experimenting & Testing
A big component of this teams work is to perform experiments in the chemical lab. The outcomes of these tests serve as input for the design team.
